What kind of school is Bessemer Academy?
Bessemer Academy is a faith-based, non-denominational, co-educational, independent, non-profit, college preparatory school.  Educating grades K3-12th, BA draws students from numerous Central Alabama communities

How long has Bessemer Academy been in existence?
Bessemer Academy was founded in 1970.  In 1981, Faith Academy merged with Bessemer Academy.

How many students attend Bessemer Academy?
Present enrollment for the 2009-2010 academic year is a total of 340 students with 144 students in K3-6th grade and 196 students in 7th through 12th grades.  Students come to BA from numerous central Alabama communities including, McCalla, Hueytown, Midfield, Brookwood, Pleasant Grove, Hoover, Helena, Vance, Vestavia, Alabaster, Pelham and Birmingham.

What is the class size?
The smaller class size affords more individualized attention for students.  This draws many families to BA as an important differentiating factor.  BA class size guidelines are:

Student – Faculty Ration is 14 to 1

Student – Staff Ration is 9 to 1


What kind of academic programs are available at Bessemer Academy?
Bessemer Academy offers the ABEKA curriculum for grades K3-6th.  This is an accelerated Christian based curriculum.  BA is a college preparatory school for grades 7th through 12th.  Students study English, mathematics, science, history, foreign language, art, speech, drama technology and character education.

How is Bessemer Academy accredited?
BA is accredited through the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) and through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).


What kind of athletic programs are available at Bessemer Academy?
Bessemer Academy supports competitive athletic teams in many sports including football, cheerleading, dance team, basketball, softball, baseball, track and golf.  BA athletes compete in the AISA Class 3A.  We are proud to be 4 time State Champions in football in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007.  We are also 1 time State Champions in basketball in 2008 and 2 time State Champions in wrestling in 2005 and 2006. 

What is the admissions process for Bessemer Academy?
Families who are interested in Bessemer Academy are encouraged to contact the Admissions office at 205-428-6288 ext 3.  The first step in the admissions process is to submit an application to the Admissions Office.  Additional admissions include standardized testing, campus visit, and parent and student interviews.  Please visit our Admissions page for more information.

Are students required to wear a uniform?
No, but there is a school dress policy that must be followed.

What is the building fund money used for?
The building fund fee of $250 (per family) goes towards renovations of the school.
